Course Description

Immediate implant placement has gained popularity because it may reduce treatment time and the number of surgical interventions. A recent systematic review of the scientific evidence supports immediate implant placement as a safe procedure when certain guidelines are followed. This course will utilize lectures and hands-on exercises to address all aspects of immediate implant placement including atraumatic extraction instrumentation and techniques, immediate implants in molar sites, management of extraction sites with labial wall defects, and much more. Discussion will focus on some of the most commonly asked questions, such as: What is the best graft material for immediate implant placement in extraction sockets? What type of interim provisional restorations minimize tissue loss? What decisions should be made regarding immediate implant placement versus delayed implant placement?

Learning Objectives

Upon completion, participants will have a more thorough understanding of:

  • Principles of proper implant positioning
  • Utilization of minimally invasive tooth removal techniques
  • Pros and cons of immediate versus delayed implant placement
  • Differences in bone response between immediate and delayed implants
  • Risk factors for complications with immediate implants
  • Indications for grafting and what to look for in choosing a graft material
  • Management of extraction sites with facial bony defects
  • Management of the post-extraction site to minimize hard and soft tissue loss
  • Incorporation of anatomically designed healing abutments for tissue preservation
